I met George Wratney in the summer of 1965 when we were bunk mates while going through the second summer of Marine Corps Platoon Leader Candidate training in Quantico, Virginia. Over the course of the six weeks of training we discovered we had a mutual interest in writing and I recall George stating that he would someday like to write a book along the lines of Joseph Conrad's "Lord Jim". George and I were both commissioned U.S. Marine Corps 2nd lieutenants upon graduation from college a year later, and I lost track of George as we were heading to Vietnam.This fall I came across George's e-mail address and phone number on a roster of our Marine Corps Basic School class and contacted him to see if he had ever written his book. And this is how I learned about and came to read "In our Own Sweet Time".
I found the book to be well-written, with economy of language reminiscent of Hemingway. I particularly appreciate George's ability to express himself with simple, direct and vivid language. Anyone who grew up in that period can certainly identify with the kids George describes, and relate to their various obsessions-of-the moment and their adolescent awkwardness with the opposite gender. Many of us, perhaps, found a variation of our own sweet time, with much the same people, the same kids, and the same stern, dedicated teachers, determined to give us the best education of which they were capable.
George's description of learning the value of hard work is both compelling and admirable, as is his descriptions of what his parents went through to provide him a good home and raise him to be a decent, productive adult.
I give the book a 5-star rating. I have read it and enjoyed it, and already find myself going back and reading through portions of it again. I'm sure I will refer back to it many times in the future.

Awful, I grew up in West View, also. If I had wanted a book about the Vietnam War, I would have purchases one!
Wratney's book of his adventures as a kid growing up in the mid 40's, 50's and early 60's is wonderfully reminiscent of those times gone by. His childhood held many wonderful memories, including a little mischief, as he continues to keep your interest in each adventure.
I am Karlene's husband and this book was purchased for me for my birthday. The reason being is that this book was written about my neighborhood! George (Bucky) Wratney did such a spectacular job of depicting what our neighborhood was like and what growing up in that era was like. After reading the book, I called George and we reminisced. So many memories flooded back to me from our childhood. When I saw the name of Wayne on the cover, I was somewhat taken aback, but soon found out that it was the OTHER Wayne in the neigborhood. A fantastic and totally truthful book. Thanks Buck!

George Wratney's book was evocative for me because I grew up in that neighborhood and knew personally, or went to high school with, many of the people he mentions. It might have some relevance for a more general audience of that age range, but some of Geoge's experiences are likely too location-specific to be of wider interest.
